Xitragupta (Chitragupta), in Indian tradition, is the secretary of Yama, the god of the dead. He is charged with maintaining a record of every person’s actions during life. At the time of death, the deceased is presented with a ledger documenting their deeds, which forms the basis of Yama’s judgment. The belief in Chitragupta appears in Hindu religious texts and is associated with the regulation of karma and the afterlife.
