Wizards’ Grease, also called Witches’ Grease, is a substance believed to be used by witches and sorcerers for their malefic practices. It is said that the devil uses human fat for his spells. Witches are said to rub themselves with this grease to fly to the Sabbath through the chimney. However, French witches believe that by placing a broom between their legs, they can be transported without grease or ointment. Italian witches are said to always have a goat at the door to transport them. The belief in flying ointments is widespread in European witchcraft traditions and is often associated with hallucinogenic plants. The use of such ointments may have facilitated altered states of consciousness, contributing to the experience of flying or attending the Sabbath.
