Wilis are spectral beings in German and Slavic folklore, particularly in regions of Germany and Eastern Europe. In some traditions, a young woman who dies before her wedding, especially if she was fond of dancing, becomes a wili—a pale, ethereal ghost who dances at night. The wilis are said to lure travelers into deadly nocturnal dances. This motif appears in the ballet ‘Giselle,’ where wilis play a central role as supernatural dancers of the night.
