John Wycliffe (Wiclef, c. 1320s–1384), English theologian and early dissident within the Roman Catholic Church, was rumored to have been strangled by the devil according to hostile sources. Wycliffe’s religious reforms and translation of the Bible into English influenced the Lollard movement and later Protestant thought. The circumstances of his death became the subject of legend.
