Kutuktus (Mongolian: Хутагт, Khutagt) refers to the highest ranking Buddhist monk in Mongolia. Historically, the Kutuktus held significant religious and political power, often seen as a living Buddha. The Kalkas Tartars, a Mongolian group, believed in the Kutuktus’s immortality. This belief was so strong that in the 18th century, they exhumed and discarded the body of a scholar who questioned it. This act demonstrates the profound influence of the Kutuktus on Mongolian society and the lengths to which believers would go to uphold their faith.
