Knights Templar was a Catholic military order founded c. 1118 in Jerusalem to protect pilgrims and the Holy Sepulchre. Endorsed by King Baldwin II, they adopted the white habit with a red cross after the Council of Troyes (1128) and took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. By the early 14th century, allegations of heresy—idol worship of a golden head called Baphomet—led to their arrest by Philip IV (1307), trial at Vienne, dissolution by Pope Clement V, and the execution of Grand Master Jacques de Molay (1314).
