Kemosch (also spelled Chamos) was the national god of the Moabites, an ancient people who lived in modern-day Jordan. Kemosch is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and in the Mesha Stele, a Moabite inscription dating from the 9th century BCE. Archaeological evidence suggests that Kemosch was associated with war, fertility, and protection. He was often depicted as a bull or a warrior. Worship of Kemosch involved animal sacrifice and possibly human sacrifice in times of crisis.
