Duncanius, an abbé from Liebenthal in the 12th century, is legendary for making a pact with the devil to erect a grand edifice. Believing he could outwit the devil, Duncanius used a book of conjurations left by the devil, enabling him to perform miraculous feats. However, his pride led him into vice, and after fifteen years, he fell prey to Satan, who claimed his soul. His legend was chronicled by Henry Zschokke.
